Friday morning sports headlines



GOLF


Defending champion Rory McIlroy will have the weekend off after missing the cut at the Hong Kong Open.

The world number 1 finished up on 5 over after a second round 72.

McIlroy started his round well but his challenged faded on his back nine and he four putted the last hole


Padraig Harrington also missed the cut while Peter Lawrie heads the Irish challenge on 4 under after another round of 68.

New Zealand's Michael Campbell is one shot clear on 9 under par.



GAELIC GAMES

Jim McGuinness remains confident that he'll be able to juggle his combined roles as Donegal manager and Celtic performance consultant.

The All Ireland winning manager believes that he will be able to make a very smooth transition between the two roles after revealing that Celtic have effectively asked him to repeat the same job that he's already doing with his native county.

When asked if he would end-up working permanently with the Glasgow club, the 40-year-old said it was impossible to predict how he would perform in Scotland, but did reveal that the Hoops have given him flexibility to pick-and-choose his days and hours on a week-to-week basis so that he can focus on Donegal.

Scoil Mhuire Clane defeated Mercy Secondary School Kilbeggan by 2-13 to 1-12 in the North Leinster Schools Senior Hurling Final Replay yesterday afternoon


Tullamore Óg play St Broughans in the Offaly Minor Football League Final this evening, that's under lights at Gracefield at 8 O'Clock

Tomorrow afternoon it's Gracefield against St Rynaghs in the Offaly Minor Football Shield Replay at Mucklagh at noon

Also tomorrow in the Laois GALA Under 13 Football Competition Semi Finals

St Pauls play O'Dempseys while it's Ballylinan Gleanmor against Ballyroan Abbey with both games at 1

This evening in Westmeath there's two games in the Under 17 Football League

Athlone host Mullingar Shamrocks and it's Coralstown Kinnegad against Lomans, both those games are at 8pm


RUGBY UNION


The Ireland squad will have a light workout at Thomond Park at 11.30 this morning ahead of tomorrow's clash with Fiji.

Jamie Heaslip will take the players on the captain's run.


Tonight Wales will be looking to bounce back from last weeks defeat to Argentina when they take on Samoa.

Kick off is 7.30.


Buccaneers seek their third win in a row tomorrow afternoon when they travel to play Malone in Division One B of the All-Ireland League 

It's been a mixed season for the Midlands club to date, having lost two of their opening three before putting together back to back wins in recent weeks 

Kick off at Gibson Park tomorrow is 2.30 and we'll have updates here on Midlands 103 


At 4 O'Clock tomorrow there's a top of the table clash in the Leinster League's top flight 

Leaders Tullamore go into an away game with Newbridge with a 7 point advantage at the top of the table 


SOCCER

Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane could be back in the Premier League in the new year.

It's been reported in this mornings Star that Norwich manager Chris Hughton wants to sign Keane on loan during the MLS close season.

The 32 year old who enjoyed a loan spell with Aston Villa last season has already worked with Hughton at Tottenham and with the Ireland squad.

Meanwhile Keane's LA Galaxy team-mate David Beckham has been linked with a move to the A-League in Australia.

But a spokesman for the former England captain says he has "absolutely no plans" to head Down Under.


There's three matches in John Farrell Counties Cup tomorrow afternoon 

In round one Longford Town face Rathowen FC at 2 O'Clock 

Newtown host Birr Town and Colmcille Celtic play Clonbonny, with both those second round maches also at 2 

Three of the top four top teams in the CCFL's Senior Division are in action on Saturday night 

Killavilla host Willow at 7.30 while it's a 7 O'Clock kick off at Gainstown for Mullingar Athletic against Gallen 

While Abbeyleix Athletic travel to play Kilmore in the O'Neills LFA Youths Cup's second round, kick off in Wexford in 2.30 


Limerick FC have sacked their manager Pat Scully - just weeks after he had steered them to promotion to the Airtricity League Premier Division. 

Despite leading the club to the top of the First Division this season, Scully has parted ways with the club after a three-year spell as manager. 

His side dominated the First Division's Team of the Year, with five representatives, while Scully was half-way through a two-year extension to his contract.


Kilmarnock aim to move up to third in the SPL tonight.

They travel to Dundee United for a 7.45 kick off.


The Premier League is working towards bringing in its own version of financial fair play rules for next season. 

European governing body UEFA has its own regulations coming in, where it wants clubs to balance their books. 

Chairmen from top-flight clubs have been meeting today, and it's understood a proposal to bring in restraints on player wages has been rejected.


DARTS 

Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan looks to make it into the quarter-finals of the William Hill Grand Slam of Darts tonight.

The former Grand Prix finalist from Belcoo faces Canada’s John Part in the second round at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

Last night saw Holland’s Michael van Gerwen produce an incredible performance to knock out world number 1 Phil Taylor.

The Dutchman still says Taylor is the best player in the world though, despite his 10-5 win over the 15-time world champion.


BOXING 

The British Lionhearts team made a winning start in the World Series of Boxing last night 

They won 3-2 away to The USA Knockouts 

Westmeath duo John Joe Nevin and Joe Ward are set to make their Lionhearts debuts next week 


FORMULA ONE 

Practice takes place today ahead of a crucial United States F1 Grand Prix.

Only 10 points separate Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso at the top of the leaderboard.

There's only the Brazilian Grand Prix to go after Sunday's race.


RACING 

There's an eight race card on the all weather at Dundalk from 6pm this evening. 

The highlight of the jam-packed programme is the €40,000 Listed Carlingford Stakes, which is due off at 9.00pm, and it has attracted a field of eight including last-time-out winners Paene Magnus and Loreto who both hail from the powerful stable of Jim Bolger.
