Athlone Institute of Technology student, John Travers, has qualified for the Irish team to compete in the u23 European Cross Country Championships in Budapest.
The Drimnagh man is in second year of the Higher Certificate in Sport and Recreation at AIT and is a sports scholarship holder.
Travers secured
the final spot on the Irish team at the Woodies DIY Inter-Counties and
Juvenile Cross Country Championships at Tattersalls, Ratoath last
weekend.
Having gone into
the race as favourite, he had to stop at the half-way mark with very
bad cramps. He quickly dealt with this issue and got the legs going
again, by cutting through the field on the final
lap to clinch the final spot.
Travers joints Laois siblings Michael and Mary Mulhare and Mullingar Harriers youngster Linda Conroy on the Irish team
The European Cross Country Championships will be televised live on RTÉ, BBC and Europort on Sunday 9 December.
